Keeping Cool While Airborne
A leader in self-actuating, thermostatic valve technology, ThermOmegaTech® temperature control products are used in the foundation of a diverse range of aerospace & defense applications while airborne. Offering valves in a variety of shapes, sizes, and materials, our team of experienced engineers can design a unique and practical solution to satisfy any A&D application’s needs where temperature control, size, reliability, and repeatability are vital to project success.
An aviation research and design firm contacted us with a need for an air intake control valve to maintain an unmanned prototype jet’s engine coolant temperature within a specified range.
Unique challenges in this application included a large amount of piston stroke, high load requirements, a wide temperature range, and size restrictions.
Application Rendering
ThermOmegaTech® engineers designed a custom thermostatic actuator to monitor circulating coolant temperature and open or close the aircraft’s air intake flap in response to temperature variations. As the coolant temperature rose to the valve’s set-point, the actuator opened the flap to allow more airflow, lowering the coolant’s temperature to within the specified range.
An unusually large actuator allowed for the required 2″ piston stroke, and a custom wax blend accommodated a wide temperature range, from fully closed at 80°F (26.7°C) to fully open at 180°F (82.2°C). The actuator was machined out of Aluminum to keep it lightweight and designed to fit into the allocated space.
